COLD WEATHER RELIEF IN SAN ANTONIO

It has been an unseasonably cold winter for South Texas, and when the temperatures dip below freezing, many less fortunate individuals and families are often left without a warm place to stay for the night.  The San Antonio Area Command typically experiences an increase in shelter traffic on frigid nights at its Family Emergency Shelter, as well as the Dave Coy Men’s Shelter.

“Our shelter usually accommodates about 150 individuals, but on nights that the temperatures drop below freezing, that number sometimes exceeds 200,” Family Emergency Shelter Program Manager Roxanne Coronado said.

San Antonio Area Command opens the lobbies of the Emergency Family Shelter and the Dave Coy Center for the public to use as warming stations.  If there are no more beds to go around, shelter staff pass out pillows, blankets and mats to ensure that no one is turned away.

On more than one occasion, staff has positioned our canteen truck (mobile feeding unit) at various downtown intersections to provide cold weather relief to displaced individuals. Warm beverages, blankets are distributed and transportation is even offered to one of our shelter locations.

New and gently used blankets, towels and pillows that are donated to our shelter are utilized during our cold weather relief efforts.

For more information on making a donation or volunteering, call 210-352-2000.Projects Manager Will Trueblood speaks to a displaced individual near downtown San Antonio offering him a ride to the Dave Coy Center (men's shelter).

Volunteers will be out from 6 p.m. today, Jan. 23, to provide warm meals and clothing to people on the streets through its Survive the Night Program, according to a news release.

Temperatures were expected to drop to 19 degrees Wednesday night, and tonight to be even colder at 11 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
